SIMS : ( Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) solid state and surface analysis with ion guns; in a vacuum chamber, to separate secondary ions. The real analysator is a mass separator (e.g. a quadrupol) and provides then a graph of a mass spectrum (incl. isotopes). Because an ion beam with high energy removes the top levels of the atomic layers , one can detect after a time a depth profile of the mass concentrations in the target. A finer methode (seccondary neutrons mass spectrometry = SNMS) uses the post ionisation of the neutrons by a special plasma of argon electron gas (Elektronenzyklotron - Wellenresonanz = ECWR). The biasing of the target with alternate current (instead of DC) provides now an analysis of coated, electrically non-conductive materials (e.g.: glass, ceramic).

XPS : (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopie) Surface Analysis System with X-Ray-Source in a vacuum chamber. The energies (=velocities) of the emitted photo-electrons are detected in the analysator (e.g with a half ball-condensator) and marks the associated elements. A tuning of the half ball condensator gives a spectrum of the detected elements in the so stimulated target. The amount of those detected elektrons with equal energies per time-intervall is proportional to the concentration of the associated elements in that way (that means without destruction)analysed target . Additional this method provides also an information of the (chemical relevant) rates of linkage electrons in the target.
